Conor Maynard first got noticed when he started recording videos of himself singing in his bedroom on a self-confessed cheap webcam and uploaded them onto youtube between 2008-2011.
Like many successful artists who get noticed this way, his videos slowly grew thousands and thousands of views, to the point where they are now in the millions of views. Anyone who gets this much attention, inevitably gets signed up by a record company (EMI subsidiary, Parlophone) which is exactly what happened to Conor.
His first single released on youtube was actually a track called “Breathe” and was a cover song. Conor then began to upload more tracks to youtube with a rapper friend called Anth Melo.
There are so many unsigned artists out there trying to do exactly what Conor has done. To be noticed and get signed you have to be really really good, combined with a bit of luck. Once the word starts spreading about a new artist, it spreads fast! Now that we have social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, it’s definitely a lot easier for new artists to get noticed quicker. Friends tell their friends and so on.
Any artist who has grown so well known in a very organic, natural way often has a lot more respect. They got to where they are not through the media, or a record company, but through sheer talent and determination. It takes serious guts to put yourself out there and not know how people will respond to your videos.
Conor’s success snowballed early in 2012 when he was not only nominated, but actually won the MTV “Brand New for 2012″ award. He had won a massive 45% of the vote. Recognition on MTV with it’s hundreds of thousands of viewers is a sure fire way to get even more famous. It’s clear Conor is going to receive even more exposure now on MTV.
Artists who have been nominated for this award in the past include Lady Gaga, Tiny Tempah, Jessie J and Justin Bieber. It’s incredible that a young lad from Brighton, UK, who made videos in his bedroom to get famous, is now amongst massive star names like this.
Many people are now calling Conor the UK’s answer to Justin Bieber. Conor has specifically stated he is “very different to Justin Bieber” yet surely Conor must be happy to be compared to someone with such a mega level of world success as Bieber.
